RGPD “Pillory” counter to rubber guard pass

This guy asked me for some feed back. I’m really lazy, I figured I’d post it and let you guys decide.

After seeing this video it makes me think that maybe my Rubber Guard isn’t that bad after all.

    Train Hard, Stay Safe,
    Good Luck

  2. ian (the real one) says:

    no

  3. Ian says:

Looks plausible, but over complicated… Just the name sucks.

BTW, Ian, ma mamma named me Ian… be good. :)

    Peace!

  4. Dave says:

The way that guy was passing at the beginning, couldn’t you just toss him into a triangle immediately and skip all this?

  5. Noah says:

Its plausable but would have to be super tight in order to avoid the fly over pass that could come as a counter.

  6. Shawn Arnold says:

your guard would be passed before you could even test this out in practice

  7. Lazy Jits says:

I’m not gonna knock it til I try it but it seems like as soon as you try to change your arm position in the beginning, it opens a huge window for your opponent to get his hand off the mat. I’ll try it tonight on some different guys and decide whether is makes sense or not. I have my doubts.

  8. Debacle says:

Options. There have been situation where you just end up in obscure positions and knowin this pillow thing might get you a couple taps in your career, but personally… i would clear to chill dog and carni his ass when he passes. id probably bait him for it. But when he gets hip to your game, the pillowry(really bad name) might be a slick little counter. keep him guessin. Options- plan b. Sick know, but ill drill it. you never know.

  9. Mdrnsamurai says:

Didn’t want to jump too quickly at this one but, His Opponents hand is on the Mat and he could clear and go to Chill Dog and Progress from there. This is such a poorly executed Pass and leaves so many options that you could go to before the “Pillory”. WTF.

  10. BrianR says:

How does putting your right hand around and under prevent him from wanting to pass? I feel like if I was the person doing the passing I wouldn’t stop to “defend” (whatever it is I’m defending), I’d just keep passing to half guard or side control… seems like that would take away any threat… but who knows I’d have to try it out first I guess.

  11. BrianR says:

…also, if you already got the hand on the mat, Double Bag it!!! Prevents all that passing non-sence right away. :D

  12. Mdrnsamurai says:

It looks like a botched attempt at a Meat Hook?

  13. Scott Elkin says:

I saw the yellow mats and stopped paying attention.

  14. Eddie Bravo's Inner Thoughts says:

I wish noobs who aren’t certified 10th Planet instructors would stop making these terrible “instructional” videos…………………………….

  15. Debacle says:

Agreed… Test tha technique in competition or with lots of LEGITAMATE patrners. If it still serves purpose, then make the vid. I bet they’ve only done it on eachother.

  16. Constantine says:

I have to agree with Dave and BrianR. Once the control position changes, the threat of the carni is gone and so why wouldn’t you just keep passing?

@Everyone who has a problem with him making the video
He clearly states in the video description and comments, and to Alder that he made the video looking for feedback, not as an instructional. He even made a point of sending it here where he could get feedback from people who knew more then him. Maybe I’m mistaken, but when I was at 10th Planet, as short a time as it was, I thought experimenting with new, even crazy, jits to improve the system was encouraged. You can’t expect success from all those experiments.

  17. Daniel says:

    well said

  18. Kimbo Slice says:

    To Constantine:

(Are you the guy in the video?) Don’t get butt-hurt, my friend.

You are totally correct, experimentation is highly encouraged at 10th Planet. HOWEVER, a practitioner should have a ROCK SOLID understanding of the core principles and basic fundamentals of the Rubber Guard to the point where it becomes instinctive, as if second nature, before he/she can possibly be sufficient enough to develop new techniques. Then, and only then, will he/she be taken seriously. In the meantime, master the basics. Forgive me, but I doubt this guy has mastered the basics. You gotta learn how to walk before you can run, folks.

Why do you think the RGPD exists? Eddie has worked very hard to gain credibility for the Rubber Guard. To protect and serve….

    Na mean?????

  19. Constantine says:

I guess I should have left in the bit where I said I have no idea who the guy in the video is.

You are right that mastery of the core principles and basic fundamentals leads to more efficient development of the system. There is no question of that. That is why the best new stuff comes from guys like Brandon and Sean, and why we listen more to what they say. At least I do.

I know what the RGPD is for, and I am glad for its existence. No wants to see a bunch of backyard wrestlers putting up videos and saying “this is 10th Planet” making Eddie look bad. I had no problems with any of the comments made here except the one of accusing him of making an instructional.

This guy did the equivalent of someone who was training at 10th Planet LA for 2 months might do. He’s really excited about the system, drilling the moves, and one day he asks you about a crazy idea he has. Except this took more balls. He put the video on youtube where anyone could slam him, and it irked me a little that anyone would misrepresent that and put him down for it.

Maybe there should be another department to compliment the RGPD. Rubber Guard Social Services that saves people from harmful jiu-jitsu ideas.

  20. Kimbo Slice says:

I see where you’re coming from. Many people hate on my skills as well.

Nevertheless, this gentleman is too inexperienced to be THINKING about inventing new techniques. Instead, a white belt (I assume he is) studying 10th Planet JJ should be more focused on mastering the Rubber Guard rather than improving it. As I previously said, you gotta learn how to walk before you can run. But I do see your point and I understand the guy’s excitement. Regardless, a white belt has to know his place. And as a white belt (I assume), this gentleman is getting too ahead of himself. Besides, a noob who posts new techniques should be prepared to get slammed anyway………………………..until someone invents the Rubber Guard Social Services.

  21. Mdrnsamurai says:

Right off the bat you can see how poorly executed this guys Technique is. There is absolutely no squeeze with the legs, and his opponent is already in New York so just Clear the Neck and stay in Chill Dog. That will give you plenty of options before you need the “Pillory”. If all your opponent needs in your New York is to drive forward on you. Then you don’t have the “Basics” down at all. This looks like a very big “What If This Happen” answer to a very basic question. Master your Basics.

    Train Hard, Stay Safe,
    Good Luck

  22. Matt Grocki says:

I have seen this already..tell this guy he ripped off one of “Wolverine’s” buddy from Grand Junction Colorado. He called it the X-choke. Brandon does it too with the triangle choke from the underpass. So this guy has a good idea, but he clearly saw it somewhere else. I agree with the general consensus that he needs to master the basics.

    Happy Clinching

  23. RGPD says:

    Case closed.

  24. Dan Hunt says:

Anyone who rips into someone else for experimenting with a technique, ESPECIALLY when he/she willingly posts a video for CONSTRUCTIVE feed back, please read on:

    Be constructive. Shit.

…and no… this is not a video of me.

  25. Dan Hunt says:

Also, for those who were constructive and not on your pedestal, I’m with you.

It gets old hearing people bag on other peoples’ game(s) like their entire approach disgusts you. I’d like to see this guy choke you out.

  26. Dan Hunt says:

    …with the “pillory”.

  27. RGPD says:

DAN HUNT, this video has been discussed to death. You did not add any new input. As previously labeled:

    CASE CLOSED.

  28. Constantine says:

Sorry, I know the case is closed, but I don’t know how else to respond to Kimbo. This is the last one anyway.

    @Kimbo
I think the only thing we disagree on is I don’t care if some white belt wastes a little of his time trying stuff beyond his abilities. Everything else you said should be a little card handed out to new students when they sign up.

  29. Dan Hunt says:

    RGPD – Good point.

  30. Royler Gracie says:

So, pretty much, the evolution is complete or only some advanced 10thpjj planeteers have the monopoly of the evolution of jits…?

  31. Kimbo Slice says:

    Yea……………..that’s exactly what’s been said here……………………..

  32. Royler Gracie says:

    hahahahaha!!
