Why cant we all get along??? It just seems like tradition is getting upset with the modern day. I think utilizing both styles is the best way to go, you never know what situation ur going to be in. Its not about the better style, its about how hard u train to be the best.(coming from a white belt)

I couldn't agree more. I have always been a HUGE JKD/Bruce Lee fan, and part of the reason was because I view him as an inovator. Not because he came up with something new, but because he simplified things. I think that is probably the reason I am so attracted to the 10th Planet JJ system.

Guru Inosanto explains that there has always been different types of competition for the fighting systems throughout the world. The competition is defined by the rules. These rules may impose different types of uniform and then it is up to the fighter to follow the rules but learn to exploit them. What Eddie says about Judo and Greco outlines this really well. They both have the same objectives but the uniform is different. Therefore the fighter has to do different things to acomplish the objectives. It is exactly the same with no-gi grappling and gi grappling. With the gi there are certain things you can do and with the no-gi competition there are other things you have to do because there is no cloth to hold onto or use. Therefore they both have meritis and if you have enough time then you should train both because they complement one another. You can cross train no-gi and gi training too because there are certain comanalities that dont need to be repeated wearing a gi or not.

BUT they are different systems even though they may look similar and you need to train in both areas if you want to get good at them. Yes there is a certain amount of cross over but to excel you need to actually do the one you want to excel in. Nothing is for free remember so doing gi like Eddie says and expecting to be good at no-gi is a pipe dream!!

One other thing I'd like to say as well, to the comment above that the guy made about it being like religion. He's kinda right but this is not religion it's tradition. Eddie is going through exactly the same trouble as Bruce Lee had to in the sixties. Lee was trying to break away from the traditions and he met the same stupid and unfounded arguments that Eddie is facing today. 'Just because' or 'we always have done it this way' is the no thinking approach of tradtion. Eddie provides quality arguments just like Lee did back in the sixties. They are not heard. But it doen't matter because if you look back, Lee was saying, train in arts that excel in particular areas. Look at the MMA scene today, now people are doing just that and more. So Eddie's arguments will be heard in years to come when people realise what he is saying is true. Just like people are doing what Lee was saying to do 40 years ago.

I went over to the underground and read a little bit about their debate going on over the no-gi vs gi. People are crazy. Its almost as bad as having a religious debate.

Finally an article I can share with my gi-loving friends. Not to put it in their face, but to have a full, well constructed explanation.

Thanks to Eddie for writing that. Awesome.

The problem is finding many No Gi schools who actually know what they are teaching. There are very few still in most areas. What's even worse is there are no 10th planet schools in my area. That is one of the reasons I am looking forward to www.10thplanetjj.com to go live, so me and my buddies can train in the system. Any word on that?
