10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, the future faces of women’s MMA

December 14th, 2011

Here’s a nice article about 10th Plant Omaha.

“Chief instructor and owner, Derek Stewart leads the jiu-jitsu session as the students attentively listen … just like we did before, but in a much tighter ball, half-guard here, control the distance…

Sitting on the mat, the class observes Stewart. Between the men are two familiar faces at the dojo, Courtney Smith and Lea Lopez. Young in age, but not to the sport, the girls are getting ready for another tournament where they have been bracketed against the opposite sex.

In the past decade a handful of women have made mixed martial arts a possibility, but the barriers are still there. Debi Purcell, founding mother of fightergirls.com, has spent the past decade educating both sexes that women can fight and are here to stay. As Purcell states on the website…”

Smoke Serpent Music Video Premiere A Success!

December 9th, 2011

Last nights’ event was a complete success with Smoke Serpent premiering their music video for the song “Jiu Jitsu” at Dim Mak Studios (formerly cinespace). The entire room was filled with 10th Planeteers from 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys, HQ, Riverside, and Vista! Whereas most places you would hear conversation of work, family, and the holidays, last night was all about jiu jitsu, mma, and gym talk. Which ultimately led up to the premiere before the premiere. I’m talking about Eddie Bravo’s Mastering The Twister DVD which is set for 2012! A big thanks to everyone that showed up last night, Steve Moreno of Melee Fightgear, and Six Digits Productions. 2012 is going to be our year!

10th Planet Van Nuys and Saekson Muay Thai Tear Through IFS 8

June 19th, 2011

On June 18th, 2011 , 10th Planet Van Nuys and Saekson Muay Thai made an impressive showing at the IFS 8 (Internationl Fight Showdown) event at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena. Going 3 for 3 at one of the first events to blend fights in Muay Thai, MMA, and Boxing, proved to be a hit. The first to set the bar was Adan “Chato” Gonzales in a 3 round war of back and forth action. Both landing amazing combinations in the first 2 rounds, it eventually came down to who had the best cardio. Each fighter pushed through ending the 3rd round in a flurry of punches with the crowd cheering them on. Going to the judges decision, “Chato” Gonzales walked away with the victory and advancing in the IFS Muay Thai tournament.

Next up, is 10th Planet Van Nuys’ MMA standout “Gorgeous” Georgie Garcia. A 135 lb powerhouse with immense wrestling ability which proved to be a huge factor in the fight. Starting off the 1st round feeling each other out, exchanging a few combination’s, Georgie quickly threw a combination of punches flowing right into a take down. No later than they had hit the ground Georgie had moved into side control and took the full mount unloading a barrage of punches on his opponent. To avoid punishment his opponent turned away from Garcia exposing his back which was quickly exploited with Georgie taking his back and ending the round in dominant position.

Start of the 2nd round Garcia’s opponent rushed in with punches where Garcia immediately changing levels, and taking him down into side control. Then moving into north south, Garcia’s opponent scrambles up to his knees where Georgie throws on a very tight arm in guillotine forcing his opponent to tap, earning Garcia the 2nd round submission victory. Showing us all that his jiu jitsu game is just as dangerous as his wrestling and is a definite prospect to keep an eye out for on the MMA scene.

Last on the card was Niko “The Wrecking Machine” Ruiz, where in this fight, cardio was not a question for either fighter. Both exchanging beautiful combination’s and well timed counters, the crowd was going crazy. Niko coming out in the 1st round all over his opponent with his crisp boxing drawing blood to his nose in the first 30 seconds. With the pace of the fight progressing Ruiz ate an accidental low blow, pushing through it ending the round strong. Coming out the 2nd and 3rd round much the 1st, the intensity was never ending with each fighter throwing with bad intentions. Niko’s clinch game proved much more technical than his opponents landing powerful knees to the body leading straight into punches. Ruiz’s counter attacks and ability to flow between technique’s earns himself the unanimous decision victory.

February 1st, 2011

It’s now official, Eddie Bravo made his first trip out to 10th Planet Van Nuys to teach class and to help me award belts. The gym was packed with friends old and new. 10th Planet New Jersey, Riverside, Burbank, Germany, and HQ were representing. It was an amazing turn out, everybody came out to show their support. It was great to see everyone.

Blue belts were awarded to Mike “Lobes” Frausto, Mike “Tipz” Venturella, Jay “Messiah” Dimacali, and “Diamond” Ryan Bradford. Each one of these guys had their own personal path to their belt. We’ve worked hard together to set and achieve goals, both individual and team. I now try to set the standard high so when the student gets his/her ranking, they feel a huge sense of accomplishment.

This is the first of many big things to come this year at 10th Planet Van Nuys! It’s going to be a wild ride.

Staph Skin Infections!

December 22nd, 2010

At 10th Planet Van Nuys we understand that it’s important to keep the gym clean in order to avoid skin infections. They can lead to missed training time, or worse they can cause serious health issues. Thats why we clean and disinfect our mats several times a day with a cleaner that kills the viruses, bacteria and fungi. But it doesn’t stop there. YOU should make sure you’re taking precautions, take showers after you practice and use an anti-bacterial soap. If you can’t get to a shower right away, you can use disinfectant wipes to hold you over. If you want to take preventative steps, there are also protective foams you can put on your body prior to training. If you aren’t already using one, I suggest you use Defense Soap. 10th Planet Watch has partnered up with Defense Soap, so if you’d like to buy this product, you can click the banners on the side. Make sure you train hard, but more importantly, train smart.

Below is an article I found on Defense Soap’s website on staph. Staph is a NASTY little bugger. If you don’t believe me, look at what it did to Kevin Randleman.

What is Staph Infection?

Staphylococcus (commonly called as Staph) is a group of bacteria that causes a multitude of skin infections among humans. Over 30 different types of Staphylococci can infect humans, but most infections are caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococci can be found normally in the nose and on the skin (and less commonly in other locations) of 20%-30% of healthy adults. These Staph Skin Infections range from minor ones requiring no medication to quite severe ones.

The Staph Infection often begins with a small cut, abrasion or crack which gets infected by the Staphylococcus bacteria. The severity of the skin infection depends on how fast and how deep the bacteria spread and whether the infection is treatable with antibiotics or not. The Antibiotic Resistant Staph Infections like MRSA are common in North America.

Some more conditions caused by the Staph Bacteria are:

Folliculitis
An infection of the hair follicles that causes small white headed boils on the skin. This often starts when hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing, blockage of the follicle, or shaving.

Boils
Localized skin infections that run deeper within hair follicles that leave swollen, red, painful lump in the skin.

Styes or Hordeolum
Infection of the follicle surrounding the eyelashes that causes pimple-like sores on eyelids.

Impetigo
Generally affects the skin around mouth and nose, causes red sores which develop into blisters. While Impetigo skin infection is most common among children, contact sports athletes are also susceptible.

Abscess
An infection of skin that causes localized collection of pus accompanied by inlammation of the infected area. This may appear on any part of the bidy.
What are the Symptoms and Signs of a Staph infection?

Staph infections range from a simple boil to antibiotic resistant infections to flesh-eating infections. This makes it imperative to identify the infection in the early stages and opt for the correct treatment.

Most commonly the infection starts with a noticeable redness, swelling and pain in the affected area. Sometimes it begins with a skin sore or a localized collection of pus, known as an abscess, boil, or furuncle. As the severity increases the patient may develop fever.

What are the causes of Staph Infection on the Skin?

The Staphylococcus bacteria naturally reside on the human body. Whenever there is damage to the skin in form of a cut or abrasion the bacteria may enter the wound. As the bacteria overcome the natural protective mechanisms of the body it leads to the Staph Skin Infections.

People with weak immune system or already having skin problems like burns or eczema are more susceptible to the infection.

How to Prevent Staph Infection?

Good Hygiene is the best way to protect yourself from staph infection. People who are otherwise healthy typically do not usually become severely ill from staph infections, but those at special risk, who have weakened immune systems.

Staph Infection Prevention and Treatment with Defense Soap

As a fighter or sports person you need to sanitize your skin regularly. However using synthetic chemicals to cleanse your skin before you train is not the right option. The bacteria on your skin are your natural protection when you are training. Using products that contain triclosan, alcohol or other chemicals before you train makes you more susceptible to Staph skin infections by killing the protection that nature has provided for you.

The Defense Soap Advantage

Defense Soap does not contain synthetic chemicals. Instead, it is formulated with 100% natural essential oils. These essential oils are known to have very powerful antibacterial, antiviral properties. Yet, they do not destroy all of the skin’s natural bacteria, as chemicals will. The healthy bacteria left behind continue to flourish and allow the skin to continue to protect itself from harmful pathogens.

Secondly, using soap as the delivery method makes perfect sense. Soap can penetrate every part of your body easily, simply, quickly and economically.
