BJJ Kumite Star, Sean Roberts, Teaches At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys

January 17th, 2013 In 10th Planet Van Nuys, Podcast, Uncategorized | Comments Off

We had the absolute pleasure of having Sean Roberts, one of the stars of the BJJ Kumite, come by 10th Planet Van Nuys and teach our morning class. He showed some great details on the knee slicer pass, on the Americana, and some new details on the Samurai back-take. He rolled with all takers afterwards! If you’re not familiar with him, he’s one of the Rising stars coming in Jiu Jitsu out of Ralph Gracie’s Academy in Northern California. He’s also infamous for his submission victory over current UFC lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, check it out.

January 10th, 2013 In Techniques | Comments Off

Here’s me Coach Alder, showing my absolute favorite sweep in the world, the Homer Simpson from deep half guard. Jeff Glover originally showed me this back in the day at the original Legends MMA on La Brea in Hollywood, CA. Several years later, I’m still sweeping everybody I can with it. Thank you Mr. Glover for creating a monster!

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys: The Ham Sandwich Sweep and Submission

January 8th, 2013 In 10th Planet Van Nuys | Comments Off

This move is awesome! It’s very difficult for you opponent to see it coming. When you get it locked in, it’s almost impossible to scramble out. If you opponent does happen to get out, you can transition to a heel hook, or sometimes even a figure four leg lock!

10th Planet Van Nuys Jan ’13 Curriculum: Arm Drag to Rear Naked Choke (RNC)

January 8th, 2013 In Techniques, Uncategorized | Comments Off

The arm drag is a versitile move, both on the ground and from standing. It can be used to set up finishes, or set up takedowns. Ever since learning it after Marcello Garcia crushed everybody with it, it has been a staple of my game. Below is one of my favorite ways to get the RNC.

I don’t talke too much about it in this article, but hand fighting is a huge part of getting the armdrag. Without winner the hand fight, it’ll be very difficult to be able to just grab the arm straight forward. Now days, the set up to the armdrag is just as important as the armdrag itself.

What Makes a Good Jiu Jitsu Training Partner part 3

November 22nd, 2012 In Uncategorized | Comments Off

Ok so helpfully you’ve read my two previous articles on the subject of the importance of good training partners. I you haven’t read them yet, why don’t you click here to see the first one, and click here to see the second one.

  • Now you should be all caught up with what makes a good training partner. Going back, I realized I didn’t mention the obvious things that could make you want to, or not want to, work out with another person. Let’s make a list of things that would be important.
  • Wear zippers, pockets or buttons. This can be annoying sometimes when you get scratched, but this can be fat out dangerous as well. We’ve had a student that actually needed stitches because there was a small zipper on the pant leg of his sweats. If he has to get stitches that can lead to missing class. Be mindful of what you wear to class. For this and a multitude of other reasons, I will be making a bottom half uniform in the near future.
  • Wear unwashed uniform. This stinks, and it makes people not want to roll with you. If you get a reputation for being the class stinker, it will deter people from working with you. If they do work with you, they’ll have a terrible class because the’re going to have to smell you the whole time. Not only does this suck, but it also is dangerous. You can get all kinds of diseases from unclean uniforms. Nothing would be worse then getting staph from you training partner due to the fact he was too lazy to wash his clothing.
  • Have bad body odor or bad breath. This sort of goes along with having an unwashed uniform. Go out and get some wipes from Defense Soap, click the link on the bottom of this page. You can also get some body spray and apply that sparingly to you body, it will make your experience at the gym more enjoyable, and make people show you all their secrets instead of avoiding you altogether.

I got loads more of these, tune in next time for more tips on how not to be a douche bag.

10th Planet Van Nuys, UFC 154 @ Orochon Ramen a Success!!

November 19th, 2012 In News | Comments Off

Thanks to everybody that came out to our 10th Planet Van Nuys, Orochon Ramen, UFC 154 party. We had an amazing turn out. As always the owner, Shigeki Matsuda and his friendly, helpful staff, hosted the event. If you haven’t heard of this place, check out the episode on “Man vs. Food” they have some of the best Ramen on the planet. This ain’t your college Top Ramen, this is the real deal, straight from Kanagawa, Japan. The place was jam packed with all kinds of people. It’s nice to finally have a place we can all go to watch the fights. With the team expanding and growing bigger, we may have to eventually rent out a movie theatre to fit everybody in it! Until that day, we’ll just stay with Orochon!

The show did not disappoint. The main event was a blood bath that saw Georges St. Pierre, dominate Carlos Condit. GSP did get rocked by a unorthdox high kick that landed almost out of nowhere. It momentarily looked like the interim champion, Condit could have bested the St. Pierre, but GSP recovered and continued to dominate the fight. In other fights, Martin Kampmann was steamrolled by an impressive, right hook, straight left combination by Johny Hendricks. The former NCAA stand out, Hendricks, has been brutalizing opponents with his power and wrestling for some time now. He may be in line for a title shot, if Anderson Silva doesn’t get the super fight he’s been wanting with Georges St. Pierre. I missed the actual match, but in BJJ news, Ivan Menjivar had an impressive armbar finish. So much so, he received submission of the night. I love that the UFC gives these bonuses, it makes for much more interesting matches!

We look forward to the next event December 29th, when Dos Santos takes on Cain Velasquez. This is the highly anticipated match from the first Fox show. Hopefully we’ll get to see the fight go just a little longer this time. In the first fight, Dos Santos made quick work of Cain.

Smoke Serpent Music Video Premiere A Success!

December 9th, 2011 In News | Comments Off

Last nights’ event was a complete success with Smoke Serpent premiering their music video for the song “Jiu Jitsu” at Dim Mak Studios (formerly cinespace). The entire room was filled with 10th Planeteers from 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys, HQ, Riverside, and Vista! Whereas most places you would hear conversation of work, family, and the holidays, last night was all about jiu jitsu, mma, and gym talk. Which ultimately led up to the premiere before the premiere. I’m talking about Eddie Bravo’s Mastering The Twister DVD which is set for 2012! A big thanks to everyone that showed up last night, Steve Moreno of Melee Fightgear, and Six Digits Productions. 2012 is going to be our year!
