10th Planet Police: Spider Web Position UFC MMA Jiu-jitsu

April 11th, 2014 In 10th planet police | Comments Off

So, I initially found MMA Surge when I saw a ton of people sharing their Lockdown video. I thought, no big deal, Eddie just used the Lockdown against Royler Gracie, it’s a hot topic. On further inspection, I saw some negative comments relating to the video, ok now it peaked my interest. Since I only respond to negative feedback, I clicked on the link.

I had to say, at first glance it looked like a pretty polished product. The video was well put together. They had a nice camera, and it was well lit. They had multiple camera angles. The audio is good, there’s no background noise, and they had production sound, it doesn’t sound like the shitty built in camera mics that most videos are shot on. The editing was good, they cut between the different cameras. They even had some special effect cuts. They had animations and some cool logos and stuff. Andrew “The Squid” Montinez is a good looking kid with charm and charisma. He’s well spoken and conducts himself professionally.

Now I’ll start with the critiques. Somewhere there’s a group of break dancers angry with Andrew “The Squid” Montinez. The production team obviously stole their cardboard and used as a gym mat alternative. The location was interesting. Instead of using a traditional played out gym environment they opted to use the crack house location from “Jungle Fever.” I was halfway expecting Gator and a strung out Halle Berry to walk in the frame at any moment.

The title of the video is “Spider Web Position UFC MMA Jiu-jitsu.” I think somebody heard that if you use keywords in the title, the Google spiderbots will find your videos and rank them higher so you can get rich from advertising. SEO can be done tastefully without looking like spam. I kept thinking the vid would cut over to a penis enlargement pill or a webcam girl ad at any moment.

As for the actually content of the video, well I’m speechless. If you know the 10th Planet system, you’ll be very familiar with the Spider Web. It’s a well defined position with a particular group of moves attached to it. This video is NOT the Spider Web position. It has similarities to it, but the entire reason the spider web is the position it is, is because of the control it uses on the lower body. “The Squid” failed to show the detail that separates the Spider Web from a regular arm bar. 2 seconds of research on the internet would have shown that. I won’t comment on the validity of his techniques, as I haven’t drilled them or tried them, but judging on his lack of research, I’ll just take a wild guess and say they’re not well thought out either.

It seems like a lot of effort production wise, just to show a bunch of techniques that are not what you claim they are?

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys Gets a New Crash Pad!

May 31st, 2013 In 10th Planet Van Nuys | Comments Off

We just got ourselves a new Dollamur Swain landing pad! These things are wonderful for practicing high impact slams, throws or flying attacks on. No more knocking the wind out of ourselves when trying out that flying triangle or armbar! Students can be tentative trying out these moves sometimes because of the the fear of landing hard, and possibly injuring themselves. Not anymore! These things feel like your landing on a nice cushy cloud. Not only are they good big huge double leg slams, but we can now practice our pro-wrestling moves on each other as well. Look for more fun things to come from this essential piece of training equipment!

They were responsible for recording all kinds of sounds that will be used in the game. Coach Alder Hampel was a consultant on the project and helped direct his students, Georgie Garcia, Mile “Lobes” Frausto, Mike “Tipz” Venturella, Ryan Bradford, Yumi Matsumoto, David Alvarez, Sven Manseau, Gabe Calvento and pro mma fighter, Keenan Lewis. The guys did an amazing job and the EA rep Ted Conely was stoked with their work. Make sure everybody goes and and buys this game when it comes out! 10th Planet Purple Belt, Kelvin Gastelum, Beats Uriah Hall to Become The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner.

April 13th, 2013 In MMA, News | Comments Off

Congratulations to 10th Planet Yuma’s purple belt, Kelvin Gastelum on winning “The Ultimate Fighter” season 17! In an amazing fight, he edged out the favorite, Uriah Hall, by a split decision. At 21 years of age, many thought Kelvin had no chance against what many people called the scariest contestant TUF has ever had. Before tonight the people were relatively unfamiliar with Kelvin, I’m happy he was able to shock the world with his heart, and his wrestling. Awesome victory!

UFC Nottingham: Hardy vs. Sadollah today! **10th Planet Van Nuys Backstory! **

September 29th, 2012 In 10th Planet Van Nuys, MMA | Comments Off

Dan Hardy is not new to myself, or 10th Planet Van Nuys. I had the pleasure of being his Jiu Jitsu Coach in his title fight versus Georges St. Pierre. It was at that point, the highlight of my MMA coaching career. Being able to have the honor of being a part of something that big, a title shot against one of the biggest draws in the sport, was indescribable. The coverage was crazy, Dan was doing interview after interview, photo shoots, appearances, and not to mention the camera’s followed up around everywhere. The UFC was doing a 24/7 type reality T.V. show leading up to the fight. The schedule was packed from sun up, to sun down, but when when could fit it in, we did like to get a bit of training in too!

The whole story itself is crazy. We trained all over the place, Matt Serra’s 2 gyms, LA Boxing in New Jersey, Ray Longo’s in Long Island, and Joe Defranco’s just to name a few. We even trained at this decrepit, old wrestling gym where many great NJ amateur champions had wrestled. The place had no heat and it was freezing cold, it was filthy, it was wet, it was falling apart and it made a great photo opportunity! I was miserable, my joints hurt, I was covered in dirt, but it was great material for the camera crew! After that training session, I was pretty confident we’d have a shot at that fight. Training in that place made me feel like we were the underdogs about to fight the Canadian Ivan Drago in GSP. I knew one thing, for better of for worse, GSP wasn’t training like we were!

Unfortunately, that fight didn’t finish how I would have liked it to. Dan ended up losing a 5 round decision to GSP. It did however show that he does not give up. Even when it looked like St. Pierre was going to finish him with a fully extended armbar, or a fully locked in kimura that was completely behind his back, he would not give up. He proved to the world it is not easy to finish him. Many critics didn’t even expect. him to last one round, much less, survive an entire fight and sustain little, to no damage! He did much better than most people expected. He went the distance and gained much respect from fans all over the world.

All personal things aside, Dan Hardy is legitimately one of my favorite fighters on the planet to watch. He exciting, he’s dynamic, and he’s always down to scrap! There’s a reason that even though he had a brief hiccup in his career, losing 4 in a row, that he’s still in the UFC. He proved he belongs in there in his last fight, when he knocked out striking legend, Duane Ludwig. I know tomorrow I’m going to have my tv set to watch Dan take on the always dangerous, Amir Sadollah in Nottingham UK. I have to guess Dan isn’t going to let his fans down when it’s in his home town. NO WAY!

Many of the fighters at 10th Planet Van Nuys look up to Dan and have modeled certain parts of their styles after him. In fact, just last week one of my top fighter, Mike “Lobes” Frausto, used devastating knees to finish his opponent in less than one minute in the first round. The last of which forced the referee to stop the fight because one of the knees that landed, looked like it broke his arm. After the blow was delivered, his opponent dropped his hand and started holding his arm in pain. The ref waived off the fight from there, declaring the fight a TKO. I know Dan would be proud!

If you’re interested in fighting, competing, or just learning martial arts give us a hollar. We cater to guys, like Dan Hardy, who are looking to become the next UFC champion. We also cater to the everyman who just loves to the sport, and wants to get a good work out. You don’t have to have aspirations of fighting or competing to train with us, we welcome all people at every level of experience. We have classes that fit all kinds of schedules. We’ll even give you a free private lesson, consultation, and tour! Stop having the internal debate in you head about it, and give us a call. You know you want to! (818) 925-JITS (5487)
