I did not give Brandon his brown belt.
I have known Brandon for many years, met him at JJ’s a long time ago while he was a student of black belt David Dunn. He also trained from time to time at 10th planet over the years. Many of my students are also full time students elsewhere, so his sporadic training at my school was quite normal.
When he approached me for affiliation he told me he was a brown belt and since I knew him for many years I never verified his brown belt, I just believed him.
Since the ability to teach my system is more important to me than the color of your belt i just checked him on his 10thplanet knowledge, which was pretty damn good.
I am not looking for champions to run my affiliates, just good teachers that understand my strategies, philosophies and have complete command of the 10th Planet terminology, which Brandon had down solid, and so does Ari, who got his purple from me directly.
Now that Brandon’s brown belt is in question, I called him yesterday and asked him exactly where he got it.
Now i know why he’s hesitant to explain how he got it publicly.
Turns out, according to Brandon, he got his brown belt from a bjj black belt while he was in the army. A guy named Sergeant Jason Keen who years later turned out to be a fake black belt.
Srgt Keen claimed he got his black belt from a Gracie military system called G.R.A.P.P.L.E. or something like that, but it turned out he lied, so basically Brandon’s brown belt is not legit.
Now the question is, what am I gonna do about this situation?
There are a few routes I can take, but I will discuss this with my top disciples before I make my final decision.
I take full responsibility for not verifying the legitimacy of his brown belt before official affiliation was complete, I will do my best to make sure this does not happen again 🙂
Hey, I’m a Black Belt under YouTube videos. Please let me open a 10th Planet affiliate school and teach. I hear the background check is very lenient.
^^^
Hopefully, I too, will attract dumbass students who will diligently defend me when I am exposed as a fraud. Student like Sam and Chris.
The members who are more offended by Brandon’s lie are people who strongly believe in the institution (rituals or visible, tangible things that organize and connect different members) of jiu-jitsu and the subculture that emerges from it (and interactions). For example, through the institution of jiu-jitsu, brown belt is a strong symbol of achievement. Without jiu-jitsu, it’s just an ugly, useless belt that you probably won’t match your shoes with.
Brandon’s lie attacks their sense of stability and belief in jiu-jitsu, which encompasses their lives. This action undermines the subculture of jiujitsu and the social institutions that help organize and maintain it. This creates a sense of insecurity. However, people should look beyond their feelings (confusing… I know…You may need a hug) and try to figure out what’s more important: formalities or the heart of the sport.
I enjoy reading about inflamed, emotional drama between flexible, buff men – like looking at someone else’s inflamed, puss-filled herpes and laughing at them. Man up, ladies.
^^ Very, Very cool analysis!!
It is true institutions are at the heart of most symbolic capital these days. Yet, you fail to discuss relations of power. This very specific dynamic provides for the breakdown human relations, and is what leads to very ugly attacks on the 10th planet system.
I enjoyed reading your post. I was in love **only until that very last wee little bit….
“HAHAHAH. Sam got real quiet after Ian (real one…etc.) invited Quick’s gang to roll and take out their anger on him. Lets see if Sam is willing to ‘throw up’ like he says.” – instigator
i invited sam and the rest of brandon’s students (even brandon himself) to vent their anger towards me by rolling with me, because we are all students of the same jiu-jitsu school, and rolling/sparring is what we do. i know it sounded like i was taunting them and calling them out, but that was not my intention.
in addition, sam did say, “I will be the first inline to either 1. choke out anyone that feels it OK to bash one of their own.”
so, sam was disturbed by me publicly exposing brandon, well, i was disturbed by brandon lying to his/our instructor, his teammates, and the public. i understand that sam (and the rest of 10th planet dfw) feel like i betrayed them, i understand their frustration, so i invite them to take it out on me in the form of a rolling session(s), because again, we are jiu-jitsu practitioners, and that is what we do.
“BTW, Ian really sounded like a big douche in his last post…..openly challenging fellow Planeteers like that. Is there no sense of community anymore? Maybe someone should give him a talk about HIS representation of 10th Planet….”
i am a douche.
again, i know it sounded like i was taunting and calling them out, but that was not my intention.
sam mentioned that he was planning on visiting l.a. to train with eddie. but i get the impression that due to what has happened during these past few days, sam probably feels like he has no good reason to train with the people who he believes betrayed him and his team.
sam, if you are reading this, if you feel like i betrayed you, then that’s your prerogative. i will just keep on repeating myself and say, i understand your frustration, so take it out on me. i look forward to seeing, training, and rolling with you, brandon, and the rest of the 10th planet dfw team.
btw, instigator, this is how i represent 10th planet…

I haven’t gone quiet. I just don’t feel the need to address every comment the second it gets made. Unfortunatley some of us have other things that have to get done during the day besides train and play on the computer. That being said….My entire post was to point out the infighting amongst 10th Planet students. The events that have unfolded over the past few days have affected us all differently and therefore we have reacted differently. What has bothered me most is that fellow 10th Planet members seem to be enjoying this. In my initial round of posts I was simply asking for people to reserve judgment until all the fact were out. There was a lot of speculation going on. I may be a dumb ass for a million reasons, but standing by a good friend shouldn’t be one of them.
“…people should look beyond their feelings (confusing… I know…You may need a hug) and try to figure out what’s more important: formalities or the heart of the sport.” – bunnygirl
“Knowledge in martial arts actually means self-knowledge. A martial artist has to take responsibility for himself and accept the consequences of his own doing. To me, ultimately, martial arts means honestly expressing yourself. Now, it is very difficult to do. It has always been very easy for me to put on a show and be cocky, and be flooded with a cocky feeling and feel pretty cool and all that. I can make all kinds of phoney things. Blinded by it. Or I can show some really fancy movement. But to experience oneself honestly, not lying to oneself, and to express myself honestly, now that is very hard to do.” – bruce lee
IF no-gi truly doesn’t care about ranking then why is there such a big backlash against what Brandon did even from fellow 10th Planeteers? The proof is in the pudding. He should have relied on his skills and teaching abilities to sell himself. Would noobs be more impressed with a Brown Belt/Shirt versus a Blue Belt/Shirt. You betcha!!! Who would want to tell their friends that they are training at a gym where the head instructor is a blue belt (unless that’s the only one in town)??? It’s a business decision on Brandon’s part (ie…would he have done the same if he wasn’t opening up an academy and was simply training for the sake of training “searching for the holy grail of no-gi….an Eddie Bravo Black Belt”).
It is not because Brandon is a 10th Planet no-gi guy that he is getting his ass raked over the coals. Gi players who lie about their rank/belt get the same treatment (ie Robson Pereira). As a matter of fact, ANYONE WHO LIES ABOUT RANK should be treated the same way. However, there are also stories of redemption as well. Go look up Dave Vannest. He was involved in something similar and went on to obtain legitimate rank.
There are gi players who hate on 10th Planet and vice versa. When you are a frog living in a well…your horizon is only as big as what you can see. The jiu-jitsu/grappling scene is A LOT larger than the horizon that the frog sees. The longer you are in the game….the more humble you become because you know that there ARE plenty of bigger (gi and no-gi) fishes around.
Props to Ian and Brent!!! 10th Planet needs more ppl like these guys.
BTW, call me a critic, but that apology wasn’t really an apology at all. “I stood up for us and in the process started a fire.” OK…did you lied about your belt/ranking before you started defending 10th Planet? Or was it after? Additionally, everyone at 10th Planet is a bunch of sissies and you were the only real man that was brave enough to stand up for 10th Planet? I bet you are sorry…real sorry that you got caught, Brandon!!!

(For the ppl that want to choke me out etc in order to defend the honor of 10th Planet…and besides, it’s only right so that you folks don’t think that I am a keyboard warrior meddling in your 10th Planet dirty laundry)
As an observer this all really makes 10th Planet look bad, imo.
#1 – Eddie rolled with BQ and was ok taking him on as a 10th Planet brown belt instructor / allowed him to open (the first?) satellite school
#2 – BQ appears to have falsified his rank to Eddie and the public
#3 – Then for some reason, Eddie hangs BQ out to dry publicly
#4 – Other 10th Planet students come out of the woodwork to backhandedly bash BQ along with the rabble of usual 10th Planet haters.
#5 – Dirty laundry is aired across the Internet including on 10th Planet’s own website.
#5 – BQ’s students stand up for him only to be called out and challenged by other 10th Planet peers.
So who is at fault here?
Eddie for having weak standards for satellite schools?
BQ for falsifying his credentials?
Eddie for publicly outing his own instructor?
10th Planet students for attacking their own?
The only really solid move I’ve seen in this whole thing was BQ’s students (Sam and Chris) coming to stand up for their friend. The rest of the actions appear pretty shady. Just hoping to see the whole thing handled better from here on out. I think BQ flying out and having him go through a thorough brown belt exam at the 10th Planet HQ’s would be the right thing to do.
Chuong… do you know Jaime Rosura? If I remember correctly, he should be one of the blues at your school. Old friend of mine.
Just curious.
Dan Hunt:
Yep. Jaime was training with us for quite a while. He recently moved to Houston though so he will be missed. We went to see ADCC in NJ a couple years ago and I helped him get a bunch of autographs. Pretty good training partner!!

+1 for observer, i agree with you
I say Brandon does an mma match with ian aka forumnewb unitl this is resolved
I don’t know what to make of this anymore. I am truely saddened by the events that have unfolded. I am angry. I want to point fingers, but I feel foolish for being so emotional. And that makes me more angry. Ian,forum newb, you have missed the point entirely. My comments were about loyalty to 10th Planet members worldwide and to the system. Its a system that I and many others have fully invested ourselves in. This is not simply about the reputation of one man, but the reputation and the hard work of many individuals. I was not challenging anyone personally to anything. I didn’t even know about your involvement until you brought it up. Everyone is entitled to their opinions on the matter, but few of you really have anything to lose. You may be a good man with noble intentions, but you’ve come across meatheaded and selfserving. Going round and round with you on the mat may yeild this or that, but in the end you get to wipe you hands clean of everything. Thanks for making this about you.
I got into a 22 page arguement on TXMMA.com with a douche about the merits of 10th Planet. He was bagging on Mr. Botello (a 10th Planet purple) and i felt the need to speak out. Its not my best work and definelty showed my lack of maturity, but several 10th Planet students spoke up together. It was cool. I felt like I belonged to something. Now I’m dissolusioned. Don’t tell me Santa Clause isnt real too. I may start drinking.
I have plane tickets for July 20-24. I was really excited about training. It was a graduation present from my wife.
attn “observer”, mike, and the rest who are on the illinformed side of the fence:
you are all living in the twilight zone.
i have already explained my actions.
brent/checkuroil has already his actions.
but i will go ahead and repeat myself (again) and in addition, i will give you a quick rundown on how this whole fiasco started, since i’m sure most of you won’t have the time and energy to read through all of the posts/threads/replies on the ug and sherdog forums:
1) it all started with some guy on the ug publicly issuing a (grappling) challenge match to brandon.
2) i jumped on that thread and i issued my own challenge match to any and all 10th planet “haters”.
3) at some point, people started asking about brandon’s belt lineage, and i simply stated that brandon did not get his brown belt from eddie.
i did not say he sucked or that he was not a legit brown belt.
as i have said before, i actually thought brandon was/is a brown belt, but i was simply implying that he was promoted to that rank by another instructor, not eddie. later on, brent/checkuroil said the exact same thing.
4) eddie had to publicly clear things up about brandon’s rank because of what i and brent had said.
5) i am the one responsible for this entire fiasco, brandon/his students are pissed, so invite them to take it out on me on the mat.
Dont forget Royler is coming to kick your ass to Ian, only he reserves the right for revenge on 10th planet. You stole his thunder!
Brandon by armbar on ian/forumnewb
Actually, Ian you said, when you should have backed out of the conversation, that,
“i’m probably gonna suffer some repercussions either from eddie or from my own teammates for somewhat “outing” brandon, but i really don’t give a shit.”
You know, you could have stopped to think about how that will affect both Eddie, and your teammates at other schools…
But, i guess the “i really don’t give a shit” says it all..
“Actually, Ian you said, when you should have backed out of the conversation, that,

“forumnewb is safe at tenth planet; no one that i know of at our school in burbank or hollywood harbors ill will towards him. and if they do, then that tenth planet member can talk to me about it as well (note, i said tenth planet member)as for him talking about bq’s brown belt, i spoke up as well. why would i do it? well, i can only speak for myself, but i want the truth to be out there about tenth planet rank as much as you do. i know that some of you here question the legitimacy of eddies system, so i dont want rankings under false pretenses to give you guys an excuse . for, if brandons brown belt gets devalued, then in a way, so does mine. and i worked too hard to put that brown shirt on to see the value disappear cause one or two guys are making up stories. thus, i came here to help clear up an issue of his rank because it is wrapped up in the issue of my rank. if he came up with a legitimate lineage, then i would have walked away.as far as brandon’s knowledge of the fraudulent rank is concerned, i do not know the whole story. i came on here to be illuminate u guys on part of the story, the part about his belt not being from eddie. that being said, i feel bad for him and for anyone who ends up in a situation like his. i mean, he has to support his family and feed his children with bjj. to some of you, its a game or a hobby, but for him, it is his financial survival. i say that because i hope that you guys understand the weight of the arguments on here. this is not just fodder to keep people entertained; it is people’s livelihoods that are being affected. i also tell you that because it took alot for forumnewb to talk about this stuff and for me, as well.”
– checkuroil
So forumnewb and checkuroil are just victims in all of this. Poor them.
dear “your conscience”, non 10th planet member, and other twilight zone citizens:
i like how all of you are on this forum, spouting off your illinformed comments, and hiding behind your screenname.

“My comments were about loyalty to 10th Planet members worldwide and to the system.” – sam
and so were mine.
“This is not simply about the reputation of one man, but the reputation and the hard work of many individuals.” – sam
i couldn’t agree with you more.
“I was not challenging anyone personally to anything.” – sam
ok, so i guess i misread this, “I will be the first inline to choke out anyone that feels it OK to bash one of their own…”
“you’ve come across meatheaded and selfserving.” – sam
yes, i sounded like i was calling you out and the rest of your team, but that was not my intention.
i apologize.
“Thanks for making this about you.” – sam
do you think we would be having this conversation right now if I had never said brandon did not get his brown belt from eddie?
i’m just trying to clear things up.
a lot of people who are commenting on this subject are extremely illinformed.
again (i’m repeating myself – again), you can look at my actions and interpret them as me bashing your instructor, but obviously, that is not the way i look at it.
i did not post on a public forum and trash brandon’s skills, all i said was, it was not eddie who promoted brandon to brown belt, some other guy did.
you can go ahead and look at my actions and interpret them as me not being loyal to eddie bravo/10th planet. sam, don’t ever question my loyalty to my instructor and my teammates.
whenever people go on the interwebs and trash eddie’s style and his teachings, i am there defending him against those delusional brick walls.
whenever people go on the interwebs and trash our actively competing teammates, epstein, denny, sean, etc., (the guys who are honestly putting their asses out on the line), i’m there defending them against those delusional brick walls, and i’m also out there (along with others) putting my ass out on the line on the competition mats. i’ve even gone as far as putting an open and public challenge to any and all 10th planet “haters”, if they question whether or i/we/10th planet can hang on the mats, then i will go to their gym, or they can come to me, and we will settle it on the mat.
i am not going to apologize for (inadvertently) exposing brandon. he exposed himself, he put himself in the public eye (a lot), flying the 10th planet flag, all the while lying to everyone. but he has apologized and i hope that he will get a 2nd chance.
Its sad to log on here and see that this is still going on. I think its a safe assumption that Eddie knows enough about Jiu-Jitsu to handle this issue in a fair manner. And we know Brandon’s skills have not diminished and this will probably make him an even better instructor in the future. Now we see Ian is a stand up guy.
“Now we see Ian is a stand up guy.” – dietrich
did you mean to say …IS A stand up guy” or “…IS NOT a stand up guy”?
Well lets see here Some Guy as far as a dumbass student….Brandon is more then just an instructor but a friend….or maybe that maybe hard for you to understand..
Ian…I really don’t care that you brought to light that Brandon may not have received a legit brown belt, but i would have preferred you have done this with in the 10th planet family. I too am frustrated about this whole situation cause i love this sport but as i am quickly finding out its like being in highschool all over again and really i don’t have time for it. I have a wife and 3 kids to take care, yet i do need my area of release like any normal person should have. No one wants to come and release any angry or frustration on you. I am just really ready for all of this to pass.
This will be my last post about this situation cause this is all dead to me.
Is (Don’t know you but your writing seems genuine…It’s not your fault BTW Things just happen sometimes)
* again, i will have to repeat myself (again)
“Ian…I really don’t care that you brought to light that Brandon may not have received a legit brown belt, but i would have preferred you have done this with in the 10th planet family.” – chris
* within the past year or two, brandon has been the most vocal and outspoken 10th planet student/instructor.
he thrusted himself out in the public eye. and the 10th planet “haters” called him out on his ranking.
i along with checkuroil (one of eddie’s brown belts/very first students) simply stated that he did not get his brown belt from eddie.
i never questioned the legitimacy of his brown belt.
Looks like Brandon has made his own decision

“people can make their assumptions and accusations…
obviously eddie had known me prior and during my affiliation, seen me roll and rolled with him, he gave me the blessing to make the 1st DVDs outside of him in the system, for a year and a half i have done seminars worldwide with EDDIE BRAVO brown belt on the flyers that HE advertised, part his fault/part mine, i started his new tournie and was going to be the head ref, i have guys who have gold in novice/beg/inter and silver in advance with only 20 months of training, I was nominated coach of the year, have students who are from every major school in dfw (who would see thru my junk if i was a fake the moment i taught/rolled), blast my loss at naga, doesnt matter, everyone loses and it makes me train harder…long story short I have separated from eddie bravo and the 10th Planet system. i cant stay with him after all this. all of my students are still with me. i can only move on and keep training. just like 3/4 of the instructors here have done.
this was on the internet, so some of it got blasted but of course their are details that just arent the public’s business so people can ONLY make assumptions and accusations. i wish him all the best and wont air any dirty laundry out there that doesnt need to be, the system took a big enough public hit as it is.
i already have offers to legitimize my rank and start fresh. everything happens for a reason:)
thanks for the support to those that do.
God Bless and that is all
Brandon Quick”
Wow..
I respect everything he has done for 10th Planet and his school. This will all blow over, you should stay Brandon
Ian Not sure what that one post meant… If I offended you I apologize…I was just referring to this
5) i am the one responsible for this entire fiasco, brandon/his students are pissed, so invite them to take it out on me on the mat.
You seemed concerned and upset for whatever you feel your part was in this….I was just giving you my 2 cents/ a compliment…
For what its worth I was very close to living in Texas and was looking forward to learning 10th planet from Brandon and his students…If we were still going down there I would STILL train with him. I think this is a paperwork problem…Renzo used to evaluate people while rolling so I don’t know why anyone doubts that Eddie couldn’t do it too. Eddie was satisfied with Brandon that is good enough for me.
“Renzo used to evaluate people while rolling so I don’t know why anyone doubts that Eddie couldn’t do it too. Eddie was satisfied with Brandon that is good enough for me.”
This!
@Ian (the true one)
Bruce Lee is a Karate showman. You’re taking his quote much to literally.
Although Brandon does not have a brown belt, is it not true that he has the skills and experience to back up his ability to teach jiujitsu and sell jiujitsu instructional videos? This symbol is only a representation, but it does not necessarily mean that it make a person truly or honestly a good jiujitsu fighter. It’s in terms of logic = A = B… does not mean that B = A. Because the brown belt owners are skilled, doesn’t mean all skilled jiu-jitsu fighters of that ranking will have a brown belt.
The symbol shouldn’t replace the actual worth of a person. You’re trying to link the brown belt as a supreme indicator of skill and experience, but it’s only a symbol.
@ian
You are weird.
@everyone
Why doesn’t everyone just roll again ian and youtube the videos. All the manhandling will probably facilitate man love. And everyone needs some… ass grab and all. The sooner 10th Planet Burbank makes a decision to make a united front, the sooner this shit will blow over.
I´m not a karate showman, In fact, i´m not from karate, just showman, but from another style bunnygirl =)
“…eddie had known me prior and during my affiliation, seen me roll…he gave me the blessing…i started his new tournie and was going to be the head ref, i have guys who have gold in novice/beg/inter and silver in advance with only 20 months of training, I was nominated coach of the year…”
–Brandon Quick
Wow, you sound like a GREAT teacher (maybe you are)…..too bad you FUCKING lied to everyone. Enough said.
At least you had the decency to turn in your letter of resignation, so to speak. I would do the same if I had cause so much damage and controversy, whether intentional or unintentional. Just like how MI6 agents would naturally defect if they failed their mission.
Never Quit Quick rocks!
Sheeet! Once when I was a teen, I threw a huge rock through the house’s front window, cause I was pissed at something. I can bet my moms doesn’t even remember that shit.
If one truly loves you, they *can* forgive and forget.
But, then again, I have a face only a mother can love, also.
“@ian
You are weird.”
Sorry fren; your choice of imagery clashed with my morning waffles and ice cream..
“Ian Not sure what that one post meant… If I offended you I apologize…” – dietrich
no need to apologize.
i honestly thought you made a typo and you really meant to say that i was not a stand up guy.
“Bruce Lee is a Karate showman. You’re taking his quote much to literally.” – bunnygirl
i didn’t quote bruce lee because i think he is the greatest martial artist of all time. i actually think that anyone who believes that bruce lee was a “great fighter” is in fantasy kung fu land and are delusional.
i don’t even consider bruce lee as a great martial artist, but rather a great philosopher. bruce lee’s quote, his philosophy, summed up what is true in martial arts, and in some way, he summed up a certain truth in life:
“to express oneself honestly, not lying to oneself…”
if a person lies about being a brown belt, i would not be disturbed because of that specific belt color they falsely claimed, because i would be just as disturbed if they falsely claimed being a white belt with 2 days of training at a school they had never been to.
i would only be disturbed because that person straight up lied, not about a belt color, but just straight up lied, plain and simple.
the following will be my last post regarding the whole brandon quick belt controversy and my actions. i know i am/will sound like a broken record, but repeating myself is the only way i will get my point across:
i have already explained (numerous) times why i publicly (and inadvertently) stated the truth behind brandon’s belt rank.
you can all accuse me of being a traitor, and that’s fine with me. you are all sitting from the outside looking in, and if you knew about other underlying issues regarding this whole matter, then you would all change your tune.
brandon, if you are reading this, i am not apologizing to you or your students, i can not apologize to you or your students. believe me when i say, that i hope you can comeback someday to the 10th planet team. even though i have no say in the matter, i believe you should get a second chance, but it’s all up to you to express yourself honestly (especially to your students), so you may earn that second chance.
Eddie says “….. I will discuss this with my top disciples before I make my final decision.”
disciples?!?!? Eddie the Messiah.
Dwelling isn’t healthy. Lets roll mufukkas.
BQ’s dvd link got removed from this webpage ;[
Very interesting indeed…
The more I think about this, its a money thing. BQ’s aggressive business posture was cutting into profits and Bravo cut his legs out from under him. Other 10th Planet instructors should probably take heed at this point.
damn… all the drama ;[
i’m going back to the GI
Very good point, Observer..
I’m starting to smell a work here.
Observer:)
Sam and Chris…its all gravy man. move on…Alder posted this subject so that they can further distance themselves from me. It’s pointless to argue. And we add to the airing of dirty laundry on the net by doing so. Its a jacked up situation but we aren’t with them anymore. I still respect the people within 10th Planet who are respectable and dont want to further make 10th Planet look like a bunch of girls in a hair salon by doing all this on the net.
I’m going to go on record here as saying that I love 10th Planet, I love Eddie, I love the system, and I love Brandon too. I’ve kept my mouth shut because there’s really nothing for me to say, but at this point I want to say that this whole thing is very unfortunate and it’s a shame. Well wishes to Brandon wherever he goes from here; whenever I Japanese Necktie someone in class (it happens a lot, admit it you guys) I’ll think of you.
In other news…100, MOTHERFUCKERS!
Do I get a prize?
