10th Planet Van Nuys Has a New MMA Champion!

May 21st, 2012 In MMA | Comments Off on 10th Planet Van Nuys Has a New MMA Champion!

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys sees it’s first MMA champion! Congtatulations to “Gorgeous” Georgie Garcia as he becomes the first ever, U of MMA, 145lbs champion. His victory was heralded by the promoters as, “the most exciting match the promotion has ever had in it’s history.” This was also the first time in the history of the sport, an MMA show had been held at the Nokia Theater, at L.A. Live, in downtown Los Angeles. The even was running side by side with the Kings and the Clippers playoff games. The atmosphere down there was electric.

The battle between Georgie, and his opponent, Chris Bonilla, was an epic back and forth battle. Bonilla came out strong, and went right after the 10th Planet Van Nuys and Saekson’s Muay Thai product. Bonilla, had no fear of the undefeated fighter. After some great exchanges on the feet, Georgie used his San Fernando wrestling pedigree to take his opponent to the mat. Bonilla, showed he had dangerous jiu jitsu off of his back, and was able to lock in, what might be a game ending triangle. It looked like Georgies perfect record, along with his aspirations for the title, were in jeopardy. Fighting through the fact that all the blood was being blocked from flowing to his brain, Georgie was able to find a way out. Just when it looked like he was out, Bonilla transitioned masterfully to an armbar. Georgies arm was stretched out completely straight, and again it looked like he could be finished. HIs mental fortitude and never say die attitude kicked in and he ripped his arm out of the submission. At this point, his opponent looked gassed. Going for the submission took everything he had. This was the turning point in the fight, although Bonilla would never quit, and would continue to come on strong, Georgie was just too much for him. Both fighters scrambled back to their feet where towards the end the round, where Georgie, feeding off the energy of the crowd, would grab a head and arm throw, and toss his adversary’s feet high into the sky. The round ended with Bonilla landing on his head upside down pinned against the cage with Garcia ground and pounding from a schoolyard headlock position. This was much to the delight of the huge crowd that had come out to see these men do battle in the main event.

At one point in the fight Georgie faked the shot, and came over the top with a monstrous overhand right that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas. He swarmed the dazed competitor, throwing brutal shots from the guard on the ground. Respecting Bonilla’s excellent ground game, Georgie was a bit tentative in going all out and trying to finish the fight. Bonilla, was able to recover from onslaught, mount a comeback, and would lock in what could be a game ending kimura. Yet again, Georgie was able to scramble out of it and land a WWE inspired double leg take down that dazzled the crowd. Georgie seemed to have an answer for everything Bonilla threw at him. George landed take down, after take down, and combination after combination, he controlled the ring like a true general. At the end of the fight it was clear to most people who one the fight, including “Big” John McCarthy and the other 2 judges, who in the end, had it scored for unanimously for the New 145lbs champ, “Gorgeous” Georgie Garcia!

In other notable fights on the card, 10th Planet Van Nuys’s Mike “Lobes” Frausto and Mike “Tipz” Venturella both were on the card and had exciting fights. Both fighters have made huge adjustments and improvements to their respective games. Both look fight and compete again soon. I’m extremely proud of those two, they’ve come a long way and constantly surprise me with how good they’ve become. Also on the card,10th Planet’s heavy weight freight train, Amir Allam fought to a draw, showing his durability, outstanding wrestling and superior ground skills. Erik “Compella” Cruz fought and won the inaugural Combat Jiu Jitsu fight by RNC with one second left in the first round. Combat Jiu Jitsu is Eddie Bravo’s brainchild which sees Jiu Jitsu with ground and pound. It has recently been sanctioned by CAMO in California, and this was the first one we’ve seen on a show. The idea seems to be to lure Jiu Jitsu players into MMA without having to learn striking ri ght off the bat, allowing MMA training wheels to be applied to their game.

February 1st, 2012 In News | Comments Off on Milton Arguello is 10th Planet Van Nuys Student of the Month!

He just turned 17 recently, and he’s already a monster. I’ve had the pleasure of working with this young man for a short time, but in that time I’ve been able to recognize his unlimited potential. Still not old enough to fight MMA, Milton is racking up Pankration and grappling tournaments until he can start fighting amateur MMA.

Milton has displayed an aptitude for BJJ. Right how he’s dedicated himself, is 100% committed on improving his game. He’s intelligent, athletic, and focused. He’s a also incredible humble. I’m extremely happy to have him a part of our team

January 3rd, 2012 In News | Comments Off on 10PJJ Van Nuys – 2011 Student of the Year! Mike “Lobes” Frausto

It was a close battle, it came down to the wire. All of the students at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys voted, and after it was all said and done, Mike “Lobes” Frausto won the coveted, “2011 Student of the Year!”

Mike has spent much of the last year inside of the gym. All year, Mike worked consistently hard, cementing his strengths, while improving on his weaknesses. Through repetitions, competitions, and tons of mat time, he was awarded his much deserved blue belt at the beginning of 2011.

Last April, “Lobes” fought his heart out in his MMA debut. After training for 10+ weeks for his second fight, his opponent pulled out at 9am the day of the fight. This could have derailed many other fighters, but not Mike, he was right back in the gym. He’s currently gearing up for another big fight as we speak.

He’s not only found success as a competitor and a fighter, but also as a coach. He’s helped many students at 10th Planet Van Nuys, win loads of different medals in tournaments this year.

Frausto also found his newest passion recently when he began teaching his own fundamentals classes. He has a knack for explaining his techniques and theories in a clear and concise way. Students are able to understand and perform what he presents, with relative ease. Clients are now lining up around the block since they found out he was sharing his diet, conditioning and training secrets. Fighters, competitors and regular Joe’s alike have all hired him for private lessons.

Great job Mike, we solute you!

Honorable mentions go to Georgie Garcia, Mike “TIPZ” Venturella, Yumi, Gabe Calvento, Arman “Magic” Vanessian, and Ryan Bradford!

Mike Venturella went from playing World of Warcraft, eating fast food everyday, and weighing over 300lbs, to a lean mean, 170lbs. He’s won gold at countless grappling tournaments, has fought in Muay Thai smokers and even fought his first full contact, MMA fight this year. It’s really possible to be just like Mike. 10th Planet Van Nuys and Saekson Muay Thai Tear Through IFS 8

June 19th, 2011 In News | Comments Off on 10th Planet Van Nuys and Saekson Muay Thai Tear Through IFS 8

On June 18th, 2011 , 10th Planet Van Nuys and Saekson Muay Thai made an impressive showing at the IFS 8 (Internationl Fight Showdown) event at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena. Going 3 for 3 at one of the first events to blend fights in Muay Thai, MMA, and Boxing, proved to be a hit. The first to set the bar was Adan “Chato” Gonzales in a 3 round war of back and forth action. Both landing amazing combinations in the first 2 rounds, it eventually came down to who had the best cardio. Each fighter pushed through ending the 3rd round in a flurry of punches with the crowd cheering them on. Going to the judges decision, “Chato” Gonzales walked away with the victory and advancing in the IFS Muay Thai tournament.

Next up, is 10th Planet Van Nuys’ MMA standout “Gorgeous” Georgie Garcia. A 135 lb powerhouse with immense wrestling ability which proved to be a huge factor in the fight. Starting off the 1st round feeling each other out, exchanging a few combination’s, Georgie quickly threw a combination of punches flowing right into a take down. No later than they had hit the ground Georgie had moved into side control and took the full mount unloading a barrage of punches on his opponent. To avoid punishment his opponent turned away from Garcia exposing his back which was quickly exploited with Georgie taking his back and ending the round in dominant position.

Start of the 2nd round Garcia’s opponent rushed in with punches where Garcia immediately changing levels, and taking him down into side control. Then moving into north south, Garcia’s opponent scrambles up to his knees where Georgie throws on a very tight arm in guillotine forcing his opponent to tap, earning Garcia the 2nd round submission victory. Showing us all that his jiu jitsu game is just as dangerous as his wrestling and is a definite prospect to keep an eye out for on the MMA scene.

Last on the card was Niko “The Wrecking Machine” Ruiz, where in this fight, cardio was not a question for either fighter. Both exchanging beautiful combination’s and well timed counters, the crowd was going crazy. Niko coming out in the 1st round all over his opponent with his crisp boxing drawing blood to his nose in the first 30 seconds. With the pace of the fight progressing Ruiz ate an accidental low blow, pushing through it ending the round strong. Coming out the 2nd and 3rd round much the 1st, the intensity was never ending with each fighter throwing with bad intentions. Niko’s clinch game proved much more technical than his opponents landing powerful knees to the body leading straight into punches. Ruiz’s counter attacks and ability to flow between technique’s earns himself the unanimous decision victory.

Eddie Bravo Teaches Class at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys. 1-31-11

February 1st, 2011 In News | 1 Comment

It’s now official, Eddie Bravo made his first trip out to 10th Planet Van Nuys to teach class and to help me award belts. The gym was packed with friends old and new. 10th Planet New Jersey, Riverside, Burbank, Germany, and HQ were representing. It was an amazing turn out, everybody came out to show their support. It was great to see everyone.

Blue belts were awarded to Mike “Lobes” Frausto, Mike “Tipz” Venturella, Jay “Messiah” Dimacali, and “Diamond” Ryan Bradford. Each one of these guys had their own personal path to their belt. We’ve worked hard together to set and achieve goals, both individual and team. I now try to set the standard high so when the student gets his/her ranking, they feel a huge sense of accomplishment.

This is the first of many big things to come this year at 10th Planet Van Nuys! It’s going to be a wild ride.
