I’m not going to go too deep into this. I see too many glaring issues. This counter might work on a parallel universe’s rubber guard. It might even work on Robert Drysdale’s rubber guard. But, I’m not certain it would work quite as well against an opponent who performs rubber guard correctly though.
I found this counter on Mixedmartialarts.com, it’s from Straight Blast UK. The biggest beef I have is that when he grabs his leg to begin the counter, he has good posture. If the lockdown is being done correctly, you’ve stretched out your opponent, and taken away their base.
Another problem I can foresee is, when he breaks the lockdown, and tries to come back on top, it doesn’t seem like he can keep good control. This would cause a scramble and at that point it’s anybody’s game.Â
Scott shows us how to pass from the open guard into Twister Side Control. As an extra bonus he shows us how to tip toe mount. Everybody knows I don’t like Scott as a person, he’s hurt my feelings on multiple occasions. I still support his Jiu Jitsu however. I really like his dogs too.
This is probably my best half guard sweep. I hit this more than anything. There are a lot of options if one chooses to go to Stoner Control from it; I’m partial to the calf crank.
I might be reaching here, but here it goes. Overeem uses the lockdown to take away Takahashi’s base. By doing so, Valentijn can minimize the damage he sustains. He then waits for the right moment to scramble to his feet.
I’ll dub this technique: “Lockdown To Flying Knee Combination”
Obviously flexibility is important for playing rubber guard. It’s one of the things I’m constantly working on improving.
Here are Eddie and Brandon Quick both talking about the subject matter. Eddie has specifically stated numerous times, in order to get a black belt in the 10th Planet system, you’ll need to get your knees all the way to the ground on the butterfly stretch. That along with knowing the entire system of course. When you’re watching the “Way Cool Weekdays” block on the boob tube with “Family Matters and Full House,” be getting your stretch on.
“This is a set up that works really well against an opponent that likes to strike from your guard. Instead of transitioning from New York to Chill Dog, sometimes I like to go directly for a triangle choke.”

I always like to see the techniques being used in MMA, I want to find more stuff like this. Apparently, there are small shows every weekend where guys are pullin off amazing Rubber Guard set ups in MMA. If anybody has links to these fights, send them over, I’ll put them up.
