S’arm-urai: Samurai to Armbar

May 29th, 2011 In Techniques | Comments Off on S’arm-urai: Samurai to Armbar

Here’s a fun little move to show your friends when they say Jiu Jitsu is boring. Mike Frausto and Mike Venturella show how to take the armbar off the Samurai in transition.

Legend has it, we were drilling armbars when I thought to myself. “Armbar from the Ninja? this move might just work.”
I tried to pull off the armbar from the roll to the Twister, but I couldn’t get enough momentum. I asked Mikey “Lobes,” our resident arm snatcher and all around badass, if he could do it. He bypassed the ninja roll, and went straight to the Samurai instead. Genious!. He locked it down, rolled, and BAM! The S’arm-urai was born!

Have fun!

Staph Skin Infections!

December 22nd, 2010 In News | 3 Comments

At 10th Planet Van Nuys we understand that it’s important to keep the gym clean in order to avoid skin infections. They can lead to missed training time, or worse they can cause serious health issues. Thats why we clean and disinfect our mats several times a day with a cleaner that kills the viruses, bacteria and fungi. But it doesn’t stop there. YOU should make sure you’re taking precautions, take showers after you practice and use an anti-bacterial soap. If you can’t get to a shower right away, you can use disinfectant wipes to hold you over. If you want to take preventative steps, there are also protective foams you can put on your body prior to training. If you aren’t already using one, I suggest you use Defense Soap. 10th Planet Watch has partnered up with Defense Soap, so if you’d like to buy this product, you can click the banners on the side. Make sure you train hard, but more importantly, train smart.

Below is an article I found on Defense Soap’s website on staph. Staph is a NASTY little bugger. If you don’t believe me, look at what it did to Kevin Randleman.

What is Staph Infection?

Staphylococcus (commonly called as Staph) is a group of bacteria that causes a multitude of skin infections among humans. Over 30 different types of Staphylococci can infect humans, but most infections are caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococci can be found normally in the nose and on the skin (and less commonly in other locations) of 20%-30% of healthy adults. These Staph Skin Infections range from minor ones requiring no medication to quite severe ones.

The Staph Infection often begins with a small cut, abrasion or crack which gets infected by the Staphylococcus bacteria. The severity of the skin infection depends on how fast and how deep the bacteria spread and whether the infection is treatable with antibiotics or not. The Antibiotic Resistant Staph Infections like MRSA are common in North America.

Some more conditions caused by the Staph Bacteria are:

Folliculitis
An infection of the hair follicles that causes small white headed boils on the skin. This often starts when hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing, blockage of the follicle, or shaving.

Boils
Localized skin infections that run deeper within hair follicles that leave swollen, red, painful lump in the skin.

Styes or Hordeolum
Infection of the follicle surrounding the eyelashes that causes pimple-like sores on eyelids.

Impetigo
Generally affects the skin around mouth and nose, causes red sores which develop into blisters. While Impetigo skin infection is most common among children, contact sports athletes are also susceptible.

Abscess
An infection of skin that causes localized collection of pus accompanied by inlammation of the infected area. This may appear on any part of the bidy.
What are the Symptoms and Signs of a Staph infection?

Staph infections range from a simple boil to antibiotic resistant infections to flesh-eating infections. This makes it imperative to identify the infection in the early stages and opt for the correct treatment.

Most commonly the infection starts with a noticeable redness, swelling and pain in the affected area. Sometimes it begins with a skin sore or a localized collection of pus, known as an abscess, boil, or furuncle. As the severity increases the patient may develop fever.

What are the causes of Staph Infection on the Skin?

The Staphylococcus bacteria naturally reside on the human body. Whenever there is damage to the skin in form of a cut or abrasion the bacteria may enter the wound. As the bacteria overcome the natural protective mechanisms of the body it leads to the Staph Skin Infections.

People with weak immune system or already having skin problems like burns or eczema are more susceptible to the infection.

How to Prevent Staph Infection?

Good Hygiene is the best way to protect yourself from staph infection. People who are otherwise healthy typically do not usually become severely ill from staph infections, but those at special risk, who have weakened immune systems.

Staph Infection Prevention and Treatment with Defense Soap

As a fighter or sports person you need to sanitize your skin regularly. However using synthetic chemicals to cleanse your skin before you train is not the right option. The bacteria on your skin are your natural protection when you are training. Using products that contain triclosan, alcohol or other chemicals before you train makes you more susceptible to Staph skin infections by killing the protection that nature has provided for you.

The Defense Soap Advantage

Defense Soap does not contain synthetic chemicals. Instead, it is formulated with 100% natural essential oils. These essential oils are known to have very powerful antibacterial, antiviral properties. Yet, they do not destroy all of the skin’s natural bacteria, as chemicals will. The healthy bacteria left behind continue to flourish and allow the skin to continue to protect itself from harmful pathogens.

Secondly, using soap as the delivery method makes perfect sense. Soap can penetrate every part of your body easily, simply, quickly and economically.

10th Planet Van Nuys: Gym Etiquette, Hygiene and Mat Cooties.

September 27th, 2010 In News, Theory | 10 Comments

Hello and welcome to another news letter. I want to remind all you guys of some basic things that you probably already know. We need to stay healthy and motivated while we are in training, especially now, 1 month out from the competition at Grappling X. This means staying healthy, and avoiding mat cooties. Things like ring worm can take you off the mats and can be super annoying. Things like staph infections can be even worse. That means following a few simple things to stay cleanly and to have good mat manners. I also want everybody to have good gym etiquette. Please take into consideration your teammates. People don’t want to roll with people who don’t take care of basic hygiene and grooming. Here’s a simple list of things to follow to ensure you don’t fall victim to the gross nasty cooties and being avoided by your team.

1. Shower BEFORE getting on to the mats. Through out your day you can pic up all types of stuff, don’t bring that into the gym. Not to mention none of your teammates want to roll with you if you have a case of the stinkies.
2. Shower after rolling. Don’t wait too long to get home and wash yourself down. Using things such as tea tree oil soaps, defense soap and other such products will help. Make sure you scrub down with a washcloth, loofa or other such items to make sure you get super clean. If this doesn’t work for you, have your girlfriend hose you off in the backyard.
3. Clip your nails. Cutting open people because you have sharp talons is never fun for the person on the receiving end. I have a scar right between my eyes because some jerk was too lazy to clip his nails before class.
4. Don’t go off the mats, outside or in the bathroom without your shoes on. You’ll track all types of dirt and other yuck back onto the mats.
5. Cover all cuts, scraps or open wounds. Nothing nastier than getting bled on. Not to mention you can get infections
6. Sanitize yourself. I carry a bottle of hand sanitizer in my bag and in my car that I use after training. Wipes are also popular, I believe www.superbodycare.com sells good ones.
7. Brush your teeth. Nothing is worse than getting stuck in a head and arm that’s reinforced by dragon breath.
8, Wash your mouth guard. If that thing touches the mat, make sure you rinse it well before inserting it back into your mouth. Listerine kills bacteria, i like to soak my guard in it
9. Wash your clothes. Once you’ve sweated and rolled around in gear, make sure you wash it. To get out oder that stay with your clothes after washing, use vinegar in the wash, it helps.
10. Wash cups, sweaty towels, ankle sleeves, knee pads head gear etc. Just like any other article of clothing, you need to keep everything clean! You wouldn’t continuously wear the same rash guard without washing it right? These items should be treated no differently.
11. If you are sick, stay off the mats until you’re better. No brainer right? Don’t be that guy (girl) that gets the entire team sick!
12. If you have ring worm or any other skin disease that can be pass on, stay off the mats! Inspect your training partners if you think they may have something. If they do, refuse to roll with them until it has cleared up.
13. Remember the people in the gym are your training partners, not your competition. Do NOT bully, spaz, try to hurt, crank or do anything else that might be hurtful both physically or mentally to your gym family. If there is a problem with a particular student, avoid rolling with them and tell me or the gym enforcer and we’ll handle it appropriately.
14. Deodorants and body sprays are your friend. Now, I’m not saying you need to smell like you’re going creepin’ with The Situation and Pauly D., but if you know you have a predisposition to smelling a little “ripe,” use generously!
The less abrasive you are, the more training partners will want to work with you and help you get better. I hope this helps. Feel free to add your own rules to the mix and bring them to the teams attention at practice. Train hard, train smart, and train often! See you on the mat!
