Rubber Guard Watch: Vinicius “Pezao” Magalhaes on TUF 8

December 4th, 2008

This is from last nights episode of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Gracie Barra Royler Gracie black belt, Vinnie “Pezao” Magalhaes, used rubber guard to absolutely destroy a more than game opponent. A work of art IMHO.

Rubber Guard Watch: Dustin Hazelett vs Tamdan McCrory Video- UFC 91

November 16th, 2008

Eddie has been praising Dustin Hazelett’s Rubber Guard usage in MMA for a while now. He feels it’s the best in the UFC. When I heard they were moving Hazelett vs. Tamdan to the main card, I was exstatic. I knew there was a chance we could finally see a rubber guard submission on the main stage! Not to mention, Tamdan is also a huge rubber guard fan too. I wasn’t let down. This is an amazing match, both guys come out to fight! In the end Hazelett pulls off an awesome omoplata submission.

I’ve already been reading the forums. Some people are praising the RG, and some people are saying it’s not rubber guard, that it’s just a regular old omoplata. Technically he does skip some steps and goes straight to it. What do you think? Is this a victory for 10th Planet JJ, or is this just a regular ol’ BJJ finish?

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu On TUF

November 1st, 2008

Even after Vinicius “Pezao” Magalhaes called Eddie Bravo a fag on youtube, he still pulls off a variation of a 10th Planet Technique. He uses the “Crazy American.” It’s a combination armbar/shoulder lock/gogoplata. VERY VERY nice stuff here.

Congrats To Dan Hardy After His Win Over Gono!

October 18th, 2008

This win should put Hardy that much closer to stardom. He’s on a Meteoric rise to the top. Thanks to Sherdog for the scorecard.

Akihiro Gono vs. Dan Hardy
Round 1
Hardy starts fast in the first stanza with straight punches. The left hook is Hardy’s weapon of choice early, as it grazes often. Gono mainly retreats and counters back with one punch at a time. Gono has enough of the trading and goes to the clinch. Gono connects with a right hand that snaps Hardy’s head backwards. The fighters trade kicks to the body before the round closes. 10-9 for Hardy.

Round 2
Again Hardy puts his head down and comes out swinging. Gono, who’s now the proud owner of some heavy swelling on his face, briefly gets a takedown. Now back on their feet, Gono connects with a stiff kick to the body. Hardy seems to get mad as his punches are coming with more force than before. Gono clinches again and is hit with a hard right hook as the round ends. 10-9 for Hardy.

Round 3
The third period starts conservatively, but unfolds much differently as the round plays out. Gono, swollen and bloody, sees a kick make contact with his cup. He is is given time to recover. Gono clinches and pushes Hardy to the canvas, where he lands an illegal knee to the face of the downed fighter. Time is called but action resumes as both fighters are showing the signs of a battle. Hardy absorbs a hard punch to the chin that buckles his frame. A flying knee from Gono misses its mark and he slips to the mat. Time runs out and Hardy takes the round. The official judges see the bout 29-28 (twice) for Hardy, and 29-28 for Gono. Hardy takes the split decision after an entertaining fight.

10th Planet’s Conor Heun Wins!!!

October 5th, 2008

Taken from sherdog.com

Conor Heun (8-2) emerged as a potential force in the EliteXC lightweight division, as he stopped a bloodied James Edson Berto with second-round ground-and-pound.

Round 1
Berto throws a big head kick but Heun blocks it for the most part as the fight gets off to a quick start. Berto finding his range, but Heun refuses to back down. Heun throws a leg kick that Berto catches before dropping Heun to the mat with a straight right hand. Heun tries to stand but Berto locks up a guillotine and falls to his guard. Heun easily escapes and the two men scramble for position. Berto, back on his feet, begins to unload landing a series of punches before exclamating the flurry with a hard body kick. There is no quit in Heun, who takes the fight back to the ground where he goes to work from Berto’s guard. Heun aggressively pounds away until the bell and opens up a cut around Berto’s left eye. The late offensive by Heun garners him the nod on the Sherdog.com scorecard 10-9.

Round 2
Heun charges across the cage slinging leather the entire way as the second round starts. Berto avoids the worst of it before landing a big flying knee. Heun doesn’t budge a bit and slams Berto to the mat and begins a ground and pound barrage. During the attack he drops a downward elbow and Referee Troy Waugh immediately halts the action to take a point from Heun. Undeterred, Heun takes the fight back to the mat and pounds Berto with hammerfists and elbows from the top. This time Waugh steps in to protect a bloody and battered Berto. Conor Heun is awarded the TKO victory at 2:18 of the second round.

Story: Conor Heun is a former Division III National Qualifier wrestler at the University of Ithaca. Despite being gainfully employed, something was still missing from Heun’s life and that was the thrill of competition. Already a fan of the sport, Heun was encouraged by friends to give MMA a shot.

Before making the jump, Heun was stuck with an ordinary life in the corporate world and worked in a cubicle. When talking about making the career change, Heun said “I’ll take the cage over the cube any day!”
